Interested in Systematic ELD?
E.L. Achieve invites districts interested in providing professional development for Systematic ELD to attend a one-day Focused Approach Leadership Overview and Planning session. These events are opportunities for districts to learn more about A Focused Approach to Systematic ELD and to begin developing a District Implementation Plan . Once there is a commitment to a capacity-building plan that includes both training and implementation support, we can begin to work with districts.
We encourage training that is phased in to address identified priorities and develop potential district leadership. After participating in a Systematic ELD institute and beginning to implement, a district can build its own capacity to offer institutes by sending a leadership team to a New Presenter Seminar. For details, see application on the Events page. As districts take over their own Systematic ELD training, we offer ongoing support through presenter coaching and technical assistance for implementation.
Why is Systematic ELD needed?
A coherent approach for developing proficiency in English is essential to any school or district plan for increasing the academic achievement of English learners. This must include explicit language support for literacy and content instruction taught in English, as well as a plan for providing instruction in English as its own subject of study: Systematic English Language Development.
What is Systematic ELD?
Systematic ELD instruction is part of a comprehensive program for English Learners. The purpose of dedicated ELD instruction is to develop a solid foundation in the English language and to increase students' ability to communicate for a range of purposes. Effective ELD instruction supports achievement in other content areas by teaching students the language skills to successfully engage in content learning. It helps equip students with the language needed to express the sophistication of their thinking.
Systematic ELD is taught regularly, during time specifically dedicated to teaching English. It follows a developmental scope and sequence of language skills that includes substantive practice to ensure students develop fluency and accuracy. For this part of the instructional day, students are taught at their assessed level of English proficiency to ensure they develop a solid English language foundation and are continually challenged to stretch their ability to use language flexibly.

A Focused Approach to Systematic ELD Handbook
To assist districts in implementing Systematic ELD, we have developed a Focused Approach to Systematic ELD Instruction. The handbook is not a program. Rather, it is a detailed framework for designing an ELD program that teaches and practices the vocabulary and grammatical structures of English for a wide range of purposes at each level of proficiency. It is only available through our three-day Institute provided by a certified Systematic ELD presenter.

Institute Purpose & Content
The purpose is to build the capacity of teachers to provide targeted Systematic ELD instruction and of administrators to provide appropriate guidance and support. Participants will learn to use A Focused Approach to Systematic ELD Handbook to plan instruction that maximizes the use of existing ELD materials.
District & School Teams
Must include at least two classroom teachers, a site coach, a resource teacher(s), and/or an administrator for each school. A district administrator must also serve as the District Lead.
Institute Content & Outcomes
Through presentation, reading, small group interaction, and large group sharing, participants will:
- Understand the instructional implications of the distinction between teaching in English and effectively teaching English as a second language
- Learn a framework for how to plan, teach, and monitor ELD instruction at each level of English proficiency
- Build a repertoire of instructional routines for teaching and providing structured opportunities for oral and written language practice
- Learn to administer the Express Placement Assessment for ELD Instruction
